Frequently asked questions about Waterjet & Metal Fabrication projects
Q: What is your lead time on my project?
A: Lead times are based on quarterly company work schedules but are typically 6 to 8 weeks for a standard order. Projects are scheduled on a first come first served basis and are listed on the JAD job board once the initial deposit is posted. JAD can accommodate rush orders though they incur additional fees.
Waterjet and refinishing services have a much shorter lead time, typically a one-week turnaround. JAD can do same day or next day waterjet cutting, rush fees apply.
Q: Does JAD install fabrication projects?
A: Yes, JAD is a full-service fabrication workshop and includes installation for any project that requires it. We take projects from inception to completion and beyond. Please visit our services page to learn more about JAD offerings and capabilities.
Q: What materials can you cut on the waterjet machine.
A: Almost any dense material can be cut with our OMAX80 Waterjet Machining Center. Even though the machine can cut 8” thick steel plate, once programmed accordingly it can cut delicate materials such as ceramic tile, stone, plastics, glass, and mirror alongside all metals including aluminum, brass, bronze, steel, stainless steel, copper, titanium, etc. We’ve even cut Ipe wood with it!
Q: I’m not a builder but have a strong idea of what I want to build, can you fabricate my project?
A: Yes, JAD has extensive experience in design-assist and design-build consultation. We will work with you to understand your design intent and suggest details to fit your vision. Our team of drafters will create 3D models and renderings of your projects for your revision and approval. With over 20 years of collaborations with artists, designers, and architects, Juan Alfaro Design is a leader in this area of fabrication.
Q: What Kind of finishes do you offer?
A: We offer one of the widest gamuts of finishes in the industry. From polished black nickel to antique bronzes any patina on any metal is within the reach of JAD master finishers. In addition to custom patinas, we offer all in house spray finishes including clear and colored lacquers, clear and colored polyurethanes, clear and colored automotive and epoxy paints, powder coating, and mirror polishing of all metals. Please visit our finishes page for more information on our custom patinas and other finishes.
Q: I see that you do extensive metal fabrication projects. My project includes millwork and glass. Can you work with those trades?
A: Yes, over the last 20 plus years we have collaborated, coordinated and now spearhead multi-disciplinary metal, glass, and millwork scopes in house. Our drafting team is versed in all materials and can detail any project incorporating those materials and more. Our master fabricators and installers are experts in all materials whether it requires field welding, field glazing, or scribing millwork to fit site conditions. Please contact our office for more information on this unique in house service.
Q: My project requires custom hardware that includes pivot hinges, outlet covers, light switch covers, and decorative inlays. Can you fabricate/mill these essential parts for my project?
A: Yes. We customarily work with architects and designers on complete custom hardware packages. These include bespoke parts engineered to both function as well as fit design intent aesthetics for a particular project. Our 5-axis OMAX80 waterjet machine and our CNC machining department allow us to produce any part to fit your specifications. Thanks to our extensive metal finishing experience we will match any surrounding factory finishes on large scale projects as well as provide bespoke complimentary finishes as required.
Q: Does JAD do structural work and supply engineering support?
A: Yes, JAD is constantly working with some of the top engineers in the industry to execute large scale and challenging projects. Because of our two-decades-long experience in metal fabrication and erection, we have developed in house engineering knowhow that informs our drafters with tried and true engineering details that pass any test while elegantly fulfilling architectural intention.
